# What is an endnote?

Source: https://epublab.com/glossary/endnote/ (updated 2026-11-03)

An endnote is a note collected at the end of a chapter or of the book instead of at the foot of the page. In EPUB 3 it is marked with epub:type="endnote" inside a section of endnotes.

## Why it matters when you convert a PDF to EPUB

Telling endnotes from footnotes matters when converting a PDF: notes at the end of the book must stay there and be linked from their references, not be taken for page-bottom notes and moved. EPUBLab's engine had to be corrected for exactly this mistake during development.
