What is EPUB accessibility metadata?

Updated:

Accessibility metadata are schema.org properties in the package document, such as schema:accessMode, schema:accessibilityFeature and schema:accessibilitySummary, that describe how accessible an EPUB is. Stores and libraries show them to readers who rely on assistive technology.

Why it matters when you convert a PDF to EPUB

An EPUB made from a PDF can be more accessible than the PDF (real headings, reading order, language, page list), but the metadata must only claim what the file really has. The European Accessibility Act, applicable since June 2025, has made accurate accessibility metadata matter for e-books sold in the EU.
